Why your Reels are not getting views

Nine causes, in the order worth checking. Most brands assume it is the algorithm; it is almost always the first three seconds.

Instagram shows a Reel to a small group first. If those people watch it through, share it or save it, it goes to a larger group. If they scroll away, it stops. Almost every 'the algorithm hates me' problem is a retention problem in disguise.

Check these in order

  1. 1

    Your first three seconds

Open your insights and look at the retention graph. If there is a cliff at the start, nothing else matters until the hook is fixed.

  2. 2

    It is unclear without sound

Most people watch muted. If your Reel needs audio to make sense and has no captions, it is invisible to the majority.

  3. 3

    It is too slow

Establishing shots, logo animations and long intros all bleed viewers. Start in the middle of the action.

  4. 4

    It looks like an advertisement

Polished product-first openings get pattern-matched as ads and skipped. Lead with a person, a problem or a process.

  5. 5

Nobody is being asked to do anything

Saves and shares drive distribution. Content worth saving — instructions, comparisons, checklists — earns them; pretty product shots rarely do.

  6. 6

    You are posting inconsistently

Long gaps mean the account restarts from a small test audience each time. A steady three a week beats bursts.

  7. 7

    The topic has no audience

Some subjects are genuinely narrow. If every Reel on one theme stalls while others do fine, that is content-market fit, not reach.

  8. 8

The quality bar is below your category

In beauty, food and jewellery especially, viewers judge in a fraction of a second. Dim, noisy footage gets skipped regardless of the idea.

  9. 9

    You are reposting watermarked content

Re-uploading TikTok exports with visible watermarks is deprioritised. Export clean masters and add captions in the edit instead.

Frequently asked questions

Does deleting a badly performing Reel help?

No meaningful evidence that it does, and you lose whatever long-tail reach it had. Leave it and make a better one.

Do hashtags still matter?

Marginally. They help categorise content but they are no longer a distribution lever. Three to five relevant ones is plenty; thirty generic ones achieve nothing.

Is it worth paying to boost a Reel?

Only to amplify something that already performed organically. Boosting a Reel that people scrolled past just buys you more people scrolling past it.

How long before a new account gets traction?

Plan for three months of consistent posting before the numbers mean much. Accounts that quit at week six almost always quit just before the formats start compounding.
