How to decide

  1. 1

    Start with the promise

What did the hook promise? The video is finished when that promise is delivered — not at an arbitrary word count.

  2. 2

    Cut everything before the point

Most videos improve by deleting the first few seconds. Start where the interest starts.

  3. 3

Check the temperature of the audience

Cold audiences need brevity to earn attention. Warm audiences who already trust you will watch several minutes.

  4. 4

    Make the short version anyway

Even when the long version is right for the website, a 15-second cut gives you ad and social placements for very little extra work.

Frequently asked questions

Is shorter always better?

No. Short videos that fail to make a point simply fail faster. The goal is the shortest length that still lands the idea, and for demos or testimonials that can be over a minute.

Do longer Reels get less reach?

Not inherently — completion matters more than duration. A 45-second Reel that holds people to the end typically outperforms a 15-second one they scroll past at second three.

How long should a product demo be?

Fifteen to thirty seconds on a product page, where intent is already high. Longer only when the product genuinely needs explaining, and in that case put the full version below the description and the short one in the gallery.

What about long-form YouTube?

Length there is governed by the subject, and watch time matters more than duration — an eighteen-minute video that holds attention beats a padded five-minute one. Never pad to hit a number.
